If so, congratulations. You’re something of a pop music historian, and you’ll want to mark Saturday on your social calendar.
Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Benny Anderson, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Faltskog made up the popular Swedish group, ABBA. The name is an acronym made up of the first letter of each name.
ABBA burst on to the pop music scene in the United States in 1975 when its song “Fernando,” reached the top of the charts.
“ABBA had been popular in Europe for a couple of years before its break through here,” explained legendary South Beach music producer and part-time DJ, MMK.
“Once they hit the charts with “Fernando,” their rise here was meteoric, and their impact on the pop culture scene immeasurable.
“Their music was very much a part of club re-naissance that began at the time.”
The following year, ABBA released its album, “Arrival,” which featured what became the group’s signature song, “Dancing Queen.”
Other hits followed, including “Money, Money, Money;” “Knowing Me, Knowing You;” “Take A Chance on Me,” and “Waterloo.”
A divergence of interests led to the break-up of the group, which last performed in 1982.
Despite that fact that 30 years have passed, ABBA’s music remains immensely popular in Europe and the United States. Each year album sales reach the 2 to 3 million mark.
On February 11, the tribute group “Arrival,” will perform the music of ABBA at the Ford Community Performing Arts Center, beginning at 8 p.m.
“This group is really amazing,” said MMK, who saw ABBA perform several live concerts during their European tours.
“They look and sound just like the original group, right down to the costumes and choreography.
“I don’t endorse many of these tribute groups, but “Arrival” is special.”
Martin Zbosnik, manager of the Michael A. Guido Theater, located in the Ford Community Performing Arts Center, agrees.
“They are indeed a special group,” said Zbosnik.
“They’re as authentic as it gets.”
Zbosnik has planned a special evening of en-tertainment for February 11. After the perfor-mance of “Arrival,” the Ford Community Performing Arts Center will host an “ABBA Dance Party,” featuring not just the music of the acclaimed group, but also today’s top 40 hits, and hosted, in part, by MMK.
In addition to an unbelievable sound system and amazing light show, the “ABBA Dance Party” will feature complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.
Tickets for both the performance of “Arrival” and the “ABBA Dance Par-ty” are available online at www.dearborntheater.com and at the box office, which is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11a.m. to 7 p.m.
